Nextel Mexico, a unit of US-based NII Holdings, recently announced to have come up with GPS value-added services, which lets the company’s push-to-talk (PTT) subscribers utilize the GPS services via an integrated GPS chipset available for the majority of its handsets. The services known as iFollow and iLocator make use of a platform given by location services company Openwave. Thus, now business users can automatically and accurately pinpoint the whereabouts of Nextel users: Exact position: Utilizing the assisted GPS platform with a Nextel GPS-enabled handset when the subscriber has proper coverage and signal. Approximate position: Utilizing the Nextel Network location system when the subscriber is indoors or unable to obtain a proper GPS determination. With the aim of making available A-GPS interface in the iLocator & iFollow services, plus latest location-based services in future, NII Holdings is functioning with Openwave Systems to run and manage a powerful GPS-enabled location service platform through a number of its Latin America properties, comprising Nextel de Mexico.
